On January 31st, family farmers from across the county will take part in the first phase of the OSGATA et al. v. Monsanto court case filed to protect farmers from genetic trespass by Monsanto’s genetically modified (GMO) seed, which can contaminate organic and non-GMO farmers’ crops and open them up to abusive lawsuits.

As a result of aggressive lawsuits against farmers with contaminated crops, Monsanto has created an atmosphere of fear in rural America and driven dozens of farmers into bankruptcy.

But farmers are fighting back!

The Federal District Court judge has agreed to hear oral arguments in this landmark case to decide whether or not this case will move forward.

Occupy Wall Street Food Justice, Occupy Big Food and Food Democracy Now! will assemble in solidarity with farmers on the front lines of the struggle against corporate domination of our food system.

Protestors in Houston being covered with a tent before being arrested.

At about 1:45, two groups of protesters - one numbering six and the other 12 - lay on the street, stopping traffic into a two-lane road that leads to the port entrance. Three trucks and four cars were halted before oncoming traffic was redirected to an alternate route.

HFD was called in to cut PVC pipes off of a group of protesters who used the devices to band their arms together. A large red tent was placed over the protesters to prevent sparks, said HPD spokesman John Cannon.

Protesters then came out of the tent individually, were handcuffed and detained by police. Ten protesters were charged with blocking a public roadway, and eight were arrested for using a criminal instrument to block a public roadway.

The demonstrators became increasingly angry during the arrests. Two lay down on the sidewalk, blocking the path of officers on horseback. Both were arrested for interfering with a public servant.

More here.

Undercover for safety? Or to obscure the media?
What are they trying to hide?

Postage Paid Protest of the Day: YouTuber ransackedroom — a San Francisco-based “poet, editor, and marketer” — has come up with a rather ingenious way ordinary people can support the Occupy Wall Street movement without ever leaving their homes.

It involves taking the business reply mail envelope that comes with most unsolicited credit card offers, and sending it back to the banks with a message inside that ransacked hopes will help open “a dialogue.”

He says:

This isn’t really about running up the postage bill on the big banks, although that’s a nice side effect. The real effect of this is to force banks to react to us.

If they start getting hundreds and thousands of weird responses to their credit card applications, well they’re going to have to have meetings. They going to have to develop new procedures and every hour banks spend reacting to us is an hour banks don’t spend lobbying Congress on how to screw us.  It’s an hour banks don’t spend foreclosing on our houses.

So I think that that’s progress.

YouTube Comment of Note: “This supports the United States Postal Service also, maybe keeping several thousand postal workers out of the unemployment line. Good idea.”

[thanks mike!]

This takes it up a level from what I’ve done for years. Keep Wall Street Occupied:Postage Paid Protest!

Tent Libraries Occupy Boston and Beyond

This city, home to the nation’s first large public library, has a new and somewhat grittier venue for reading. Housed in a green military tent, the library at the Occupy Boston encampment is overflowing with scholarly tomes that have no due dates or late fees.
The growing collection includes more than 500 books, sorted by genre — consumerism, gender, activism/organizing — and overseen by a bookstore owner and a number of librarians supporting the movement, including some from a group calling themselves the Radical Reference librarians. It has a simple checkout system, an expanding archive of Occupy Boston’s meeting notes and proposals and a nascent program of speakers and writing workshops.
John Ford, who owns the Metacomet alternative bookstore in Plymouth, Mass., said the library was intended to help protesters learn about systems they find frustrating and explore possible alternatives.
“I hope, at the very least, it just makes people more inclined to be thoughtful about what they’re doing here,” said Mr. Ford, 30, as he stood in front of a table piled with newly donated books that had yet to be filed.

I know what govt cheese tastes like.
I also know what it means to have to shop at a thrift store.  (when this wasn’t cool.)
Or walk five miles to school.
Or put off dental work or the doctor.
Or have to ride your bike to the grocery because the family car got repo’ed.
I know what it’s like to work really, really hard while others party, travel, and go out.
And while I have worked my ass off and now I make a six figure income and my three kids barely know what “need” really means,  and while I know I’m in the 1% because of a lot of things I did and choices I specifically made, I know most of my success is not just mine.
It’s yours too.  You deserve dignity and justice.
The pursuit of happiness is community.
I am the 1 percent, I stand with the 99 percent.

This is one of the better one’s I’ve seen from this Tumblr so far.
